When Fire met Ice

Back with a Bang?

Even though it hasn't erupted in over 10,000 years, Mount Garibaldi is still considered an active volcano by scientists. That means it's not “dead” — just resting.

Volcanoes often stay quiet for thousands of years, then surprise us. Before an eruption, there are usually warning signs: small earthquakes, more sulphur smells escaping from the ground, or even steam vents opening near the surface. These are like the volcano’s way of “clearing its throat”.

Scientists are keeping a close eye on the volcano and carefully studying these clues using satellites, sensors, and fieldwork. So far, Garibaldi is calm and showing no signs of waking up any time soon — but it’s always good to stay curious and prepared. After all, volcanoes helped shape this entire landscape, and they may one day shape it again.
